Lost - How it should have been

Even for the unconditional fans of Lost like me, it's clear that the series was such a risky bet. A plane that crashes in an island full of mysteries which not only don't get resolved but increase every season? It seems the kind of show you would get tired of after two episodes without knowing what the hell is going on - and for many it probably was like that -. And knowing that abc isn't famous for its risky projects, how come they accepted the pilot?

Every day we read the plot of pilots that have been rejected even being awesome, and we see pilots that are actually aired and suck. In Lost's case, even the pilot was amazing, it must have been difficult to convince abc to go on with the most expensive pilot at the time when they didn't believe the series had future.

So Damon Lindelof and J. J. Abrams, seeing what kind of ideas they had in their minds, realized that they only had one thing left to do so the pilot could be accepted: lie. While they were filming the pilot in Hawaii they hired some writers to write a possible plot for the series and demonstrate that Lost had actually some future.

First of all, tell you that we know this because of a document in PDF that have been filtered recently with the date 5 of May 2004. The veracity of it has been confirmed by Lindelof, who is not that happy with it, since being caught in such a lie probably won't help him in Hollywood in his new projects.

If you read the document and you've seen the series you will notice that something is wrong. There are things that are the same, but the majority are just a lie.

  • They literally promised that each episode would have a central mystery that would begin and end with the episode, so you could watch an episode, miss two and reincorporate without problem. They would be independent episodes. It wouldn't exist an ultimate mystery that would guide the series. In addition, the episodes wouldn't have a cliffhanger. Of course not.
  • The series would have an easy to follow mithology. Sure, and what about the sixth season?
  • To avoid them relating the series with Alias, they said that it would be a series of adventures, doctors, cops, lawyers, romance. Everything together so it could have more future.
  • Todos los misterios podían ser explicados científicamente.
  • All the mysteries could be explained scientifically.
  • The monster wouldn't last 100 episodes, that was insane. The mystery would be solved in the first few episodes. Of course it would.
  • Only 47 characters survived the accident, and just 14 would last more than 3 episodes, since the other would mysteriously disappear.
  • The series was going to be filmed in a jungle set where they would be able to control the weather, since filming in Hawaii would last just the three first episodes.
  • The 14 main characters have similar descriptions as to what we saw in the screen, but at the same time they were some people that we'll never meet.

So, how is it possible that abc did't cancel it after seeing that they had lied? Well, the answer in simple. The audience of the pilot was 18.65 millions. Not bad. And how would have been the show in case of following this guide? Easier and, probably, boring. It is true that the last part of the series might have beneficed of following the guide, but not following it is what made Lost what it was. So I personally have to thank Lindelof and Abrams for their big lie.
