The Sopranos - 10 reasons to watch it

With only 10 episodes left to finish the sixth and unfortunately last season of The Sopranos,  I'm starting to value every minute as if it was the last one... I know I should have seen this series before, considering everyone had recommended it to me and that it has being calified as the best series of the last 10 years. Do I agree? Despite the title of my blog... maybe.

10 reasons to watch The Sopranos seem too few for me, but as I can't write here about every fucking episode... This is what yoy got. My top ten.

1. Tony Soprano vs. James Gandolfini.

1. Tony Soprano vs. James Gandolfini. Without James Gandolfini, this series would be completely different. He's the actor who plays Tony Soprano, and nails every fucking scene. The character of Tony Soprano is just spectacular. The series begins with T as the new capo of "la famiglia", of La Cosa Nostra - which curiously has its origin in Sicilia, not in Naples, that's where the Sopranos are from... upps HBO... -. Tony Soprano is, objetively, sexist, homophobic, violent, womanizer, adulterer, tacky and ugly. But this view lasts only the first 10 minutes of episode one.

Tony is able to make with us the same he does to Dr. Melfi, we fall in love with him, we become fond of him when seeing his weakness and defects, and despite his work in the "garbage industry", we like him. T mixes the lifes of his two families, and you see him going to work every morning, kissing Carmela and going to a striptease club, as it was the most normal thing in the world. And at the end it is. That's what I love about this series, that you are able to see the human point of view of the mafia, and it even seems logic. Until they break your legs, of course.

2. The pasta. The mix of watching The Sopranos and living in Italy is making me eat just too much pasta. Their life is center of the table, and having the italian background they have, in the pasta. Watching an episode of this series is synonymous of going to the kitchen to look what's in the fridge in case you can cook some ziti al forno. Or fagioli, panzerotti o cannoli siciliani (despite the family comes from Avellino, near Naples and nor from Sicilia). I am not the only one that loves the pasta we can see in the series, and HBO is not silly and they've taken advantage of it. Here's the Sopranos Family Cookbook, probably the best recipe book ever.

3. HBO. Sólo tienes que ver la lista de series de su historial: Game of Thrones, The Wire, The Newsroom, Six Fit Under, Boardwalk Empire, The Pacific, Band of Brothers...

3. HBO. Knowing a tv series is produced by HBO is a quality certificate. We only have to look at the list of series that is in its history: Game of Thrones, The Wire, The Newsroom, Six Fit Under, Boardwalk Empire, The Pacific, Band of Brothers...

4. The mafia. Anyone who has enjoyed The Godfather should watch this series. There're references all over the series to this movie, as well as Scarface and Goodfellas. We can see a new point of view of the mafia, making us forget that the main character is the capo of New Jersey's mafia. Here's one of the many references to the movie with Silvio. Just great.

5. The psychoanalysis and the dreams. The interpretation of the dreams is one of the most important topics in the series. In fact, this is how the show begins, with Tony seing the ducks flying away from his swimming pool and having a panic attack. Tony starts going to the shrink, with Dr. Melfi, who makes an incredible interpretation (she appeared in Goodfellas, and was offered the character of Carmela, but she prefered the shrink considering her a much more interesting character despite the fact that it was a secondary one). So... a capo going to the shrink? Really? Yep. Just great every session.

6. The humor. I'm not going to say at all it's a comedy, but hidden in the dialogues, almost without wanting it, there are a lot of black and intelligent jokes. Its aim is not to make you laugh, but they achieve it with the contrast between their "jobs" and the normal external appearance that they try to give, creating hillarious situations, believe me.

7. The secondary characters. Well, secondary to call the somehow, 'cause none of them really are. I have already talked about Tony and Dr. Melfi, but there are many others that for their performance and for the character itself deserve to be mentioned. From Carmela, who suffers an evolution almost as big as Walter White, to everyone of "la famiglia". For me, one of the best is Silvio. It's said that he overacts (considering that he's a singer and not an actor...), but I just love the way he gestures and the way he expresses, and in the sixth season he nails it.

8. The reality. As I have told you, when you are watching the series you forget you are watching a mafia's family, it could even seem - almost - my own family having dinner. That's why you keep getting shocked every time someone gets loaded, someone receives a beating or someone's security is "subtly" threatened. In that tiny moment you think "fuck, what the hell?!". But then Tony goes home, opens his fridge and eats some ziti bolognesa while watching his favourite scene of the Godfather... and you just forget about it.

9. The addiction. Some people might tell you that it's such a slow series and that nothing happens in every episode. But that's what makes it great. How the take care of every fucking detail, how they dedicate a whole episode to the death of a prostitute or one of Tony's dreams. Little by little you get hooked up, and you need your daily dose of The Sopranos. You hear "Woke up this morning..." and inmediately a smile pops into your face. I have just 10 episodes left and I don't know what am I gonna do when I have no more fresh Sopranos' material every day to watch, which has become a part of my daylife.

10. The end. As I have told you, I haven't finished yet the series, and even if I had, I wouldn't write about the end in this post. With a lot of effort, I have achieved to reach this point without being spoiled about the end of the series, but I know there has been a lot of talking about this series finale, with is one of the classics. Is it good or bad? I have no fucking idea, but good or bad, it's made it even more famous, and I am sure it's noteworthy. David Chase (the creator) spent 2 years and a half working on the sixth season, so something good must have emerged from that work. Moreover, considering I liked the end of Lost, I might also be from the little percetage of people that really liked this finale!
